Jesmond Old Cemetery had its ‘dead house’ beneath the chapels flanking its Jesmond Road entrance (Historic England 2020). Coffins were held in these vaults overnight before burial the following day.

That lack of connective tissue is a detriment, and it results in Deadhouse Dark lacking the cohesiveness of other horror anthologies. How should these stories be considered and compared, or taken in as a whole? Deadhouse Dark avoids those questions, and the technical experimentation of “Dashcam” or the nostalgic feel of “A Tangled Web We Weave” don’t make up for the lack of a greater congruence. There are intermittent terrors here, particularly the grimy exploration of mortality’s limits in “My Empire of Dirt,” but otherwise, Deadhouse Dark fails to hang together. Despite years of war and sectarian conflict since the 2003 US invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein, Iraq has returned to a semblance of normality. But civil liberties – for women, sexual minorities and other groups – remain constrained in the conservative society.

If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you are in for a treat. For everyone else, like me, you might be wanting a bit more to chew on. On the downside, nobody in this film is really likeable, which makes it hard to care if they live or die. Granted, that does fit in with the film’s grim, cynical tone and there’s an audience for that kind of film.

Together, their ghosts solve supernatural mysteries that no one else can, but not without the help of psychic Crystal and her neighbor Niko. People who don’t work with the dead for a living can’t help feeling uneasy in these spaces. But those feelings of unease in a morgue have less to do with the presence of the dead and more to do with the low temperature and pre-conditioning. Hobbes, never a particularly cheerful guy, strung those adjectives together to describe life during wartime. Little did he know, though, that one day, they’d also serve as a perfectly accurate three-word review for the 21st-century horror film Dead House. Thieves face home invasion, discover basement lab experiments, and must escape before infecting mutated psychopaths with a new virus.
